Mitchell Parker asked to be panelist for New Look Magazine Green Debate

How relevant is the green movement in hospitality”, was the question posed at the 2009 Green Debate held by New Look Magazine at the HD Conference & Expoin Las Vegas. Panelists which included Mitchell Parker from The Parker Company and other experts from various specialties within the lodging industry debated the real impact of the green movement on the US hotel market.

Although there were a number of opinions from all angles including design, management, logistics, and ownership, the consensus from the panel is that without government pressure or incentives, the movement will always be challenged by the owner’s budget. The main focus and success of the green movement has been from the marketing side. “Green is the buzzword of 2009 but not a reality in the vast majority of projects” indicated Parker who has overseen the procurement of more than 20 projects in the last 12 months. “In order to truly embrace the green movement, the initial budget has to include the additional cost for green products, but most clients are not yet financially inclined to increase their already tight budgets.”  According to the panel, green has a long way to go, but increased awareness and government pressure will likely push it forward. Parker noted, “It is in the best interest of the industry and our planet that the green movement changes from mostly hype to the norm, as consumers will be looking for hotel companies that embrace sustainability and define their commitment to a greener hotel.”
